Title: Clemens Family
Post by: roger1psi on January 19, 2009, 12:28:26 AM
William E. and Eliza Jennie (Barns) Clemens resided in Xenia, Green County, Ohio as early as 1827 when they were married there.

Eliza Jennie Barnes parents were Henry and Mary Poly (Dean) Barnes.

William E. and Eliza J. Clemens had 6 children. W.D., Hugh B., Daniel D., Joseph W., Mary E. and Gaspar C. All were born in Ohio.

Gaspar Christopher Clemens (b. 23 Apr 1849 Xenia, Ohio d. 7 Oct 1906 Topeka, Kansas) was the youngest. G.C. Clemens became a prominent attorney in Topeka, KS in the late 1800's. He ran for Governor of Kansas in 1900 on the Socialist ticket. Gaspar married Virgil Grace Mortur in about 1868 in (Xenia?) Ohio. They had two daughters, Grace Virgil b. 1871 and Ada b. 1873. Gaspar and Virgil were divorce prior to 1876.

I have additional information on the Barns family and on G. C. Clemens descendants but nothing more on William E. Clemens or, daughter in law, Virgil Grace Mortur. One news account from G.C.'s obit of 1906 says William E. Clemens was from Virginia. A news clipping says that Virgil Grace took her two children and moved "back East" after the divorce. I do have photos of G.C. Clemens and family from Topeka in the late 1800's.

The Barns family line is well documented back to 1735 in Maryland and beyond.

Additional information on any of this family would be greatly appreciated. I would be happy to share any of my information that would be helpful.
